PrioFect™ is a series of transfection reagents based on DNT’s Priostar® dendrimer nanotechnology. When in the presence of genetic material such as DNA or RNA, charge complimentarity leads to an association of the nucleic acid with the PrioFect. On reaching its destination the dendrimer-nucleic acid complex is then taken into the cell via endocytosis. Since the surface of dendrimers can be tailored, there are many ways to target this construct and further mitigate toxicity.

The principle areas of application for PrioFect may be divided into in vitro and in vivo transfection. In vitro applications include laboratory research and diagnostics. The in vitro applications of PrioFect are being brought to market by EMD Biosciences. In vivo applications include therapeutic and other medicinal applications. DNT and Starpharma are seeking partnerships to commercialize this technology for in vivo applications.
